Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Life events like pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and the natural aging process can lead to changes in the abdominal region. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is designed to address sagging skin, weakened or separated abdominal muscles, and stubborn fat deposits in the midsection. The procedure creates a smoother, flatter, and more toned abdomen, allowing individuals to feel more comfortable and confident in their skin.

How a Tummy Tuck works

The surgery involves an incision designed discreetly below the bikini line, spanning from hip to hip. The shape and length of the incision depend on the amount of excess skin. Once the incision is made, the skin is lifted and the underlying weakened abdominal muscles are repaired and tightened. This provides a firmer abdominal wall and narrows the waistline. The umbilicus (belly button) is then repositioned through a new hole and sutured into position. Excess skin is then trimmed, and the remaining skin is redraped for a firm, toned appearance. The incisions are closed using sutures, skin adhesives, tapes, or clips.

Liposuction might be integrated to contour adjacent areas. Once the desired shape is achieved, the incisions are sutured, and the healing process begins.

Recovery involves some downtime and adherence to post-operative care instructions. Post-surgery, patients must wear compression garments. These are not only for comfort, but also to help minimize swelling and supports the abdomen as it heals. Temporary tubes might be placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid. Incision lines are permanent but with consistent care and time, they will fade. Swelling continues to decrease over time and may take several months to completely subside.

Most patients can return to non-strenuous jobs within 2 to 4 weeks. However, heavy lifting and vigorous physical activities should be avoided for at least six weeks or until the surgeon gives the go-ahead.

A tummy tuck provides long-lasting results. However, significant fluctuations in weight can impact the procedure’s benefits. It’s vital to engage in a balanced diet and regular exercise to maintain the surgery’s effects.
